The High Capacity Metro Trains (HCMT) project is the first initiative in Victoria’s strategy to ensure a long-term pipeline of train and tram procurement. Procured as a PPP, the project will provide a new fleet of 65 HCMTs to service the busiest commuter lines during peak periods and enable a more frequent ‘turn-up-and-go’ transport service in the new Melbourne Metro tunnel.
Importantly, the HCMT fleet will comprise at least 60% local content built in Victoria at the Newport manufacturing facility, growing local industry and our capacity to create world class rolling stock. The project also includes development of a new train maintenance depot in Pakenham, a light service facility in Calder Park, and simulators for driver training, safety and continuous improvement. The project represents a step change in Victoria’s passenger train experience and will create a legacy of expanded, safer and more comfortable commuting for the public.
