Regional Fast Rail was in 2006, the largest rail upgrade in Victoria’s history. The project delivered major upgrades to 400km of railway across Victoria’s key regional lines (Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and Traralgon) to enable newly purchased high-speed trains to travel safely at speeds of 160km/hr.
The project involved significant track works and signalling works along with modernised technology and safety systems. It successfully brought contemporary, frequent and safe high-speed rail services to regional Victoria. Completed in 2009, record passenger numbers, reduced travel times and a substantial contribution to the growth of regional Victorian economies have all been attributed to the project.
