The Metro Tunnel will reduce congestion on Melbourne’s existing rail and road networks, enabling Melbourne to continue to grow in coming years. The new tunnel will create a less crowded and more reliable train network for commuting population and better transport connections to education, health, employment and cultural opportunities across Melbourne’s rapidly expanding footprint.
The Metro Tunnel will run from the west of the city to the south-east as part of a new Sunbury to Cranbourne/Pakenham line. It includes 9km of twin rail tunnels, five new underground stations and high capacity signalling to enable Melbourne’s new fleet of High Capacity Metro Trains. The massive $11B project has been procured under several contracts including: Early Works, Rail Systems Alliance (RSA), Tunnel and Stations PPP, and the Rail Infrastructure Alliance (RIA).
