Australia plans to acquire nuclear-powered submarines under the AUKUS security pact with the United States and the United Kingdom. This includes the acquisition of Virginia-class submarines from the US and the eventual construction of Australian-built SSN-AUKUS submarines in South Australia. The program aims to deliver Australia a nuclear-powered submarine capability as soon as the early 2030s.
IAG Defence and National Security was engaged from 2022 in the Program Delivery Office (PDO), which sits within Capability Division and is responsible for the coordination of delivery of the Nuclear Powered Submarine Capability Program, including alignment with trilateral partners’ capability programs.
IAG Defence and National Security’s role is in supporting the Australian Submarine Agency across multiple programs, providing expert management functions through establishing capability delivery scheduling, financial analysis, governance, and engagement coordination functions within the Capability Division.
